Can You Serve Overhead in Squash?

Guides

Is an overhead serve legal in squash? Learn the official serving rules, common faults and whether an overhead serve is worth trying.

The quick answer

Yes. An overhead serve is allowed in squash. The rules do not require you to serve underarm. What matters is where you stand, where the ball hits the front wall and where its first bounce would land. So if someone calls your overhead serve illegal simply because you hit it above your head, they are mistaken.

What makes any squash serve legal?

At the moment of contact, you must have one foot on the floor inside the service box, without that foot touching a boundary line. The ball must be released from your hand or racket and struck before touching anything else. It must travel directly to the front wall, striking above the service line and below the out line, without hitting the front and side walls simultaneously. Unless your opponent volleys it, its first floor bounce must land in the opposite back quarter without touching the dividing lines. A serve that breaks these conditions is a fault and loses the rally.

How to try an overhead serve

Start balanced in the service box. Toss the ball high enough to make comfortable contact, but not so high that your timing suffers. Aim for a controlled, deep serve rather than maximum power. Watch your feet as you swing: a dramatic overhead motion is no excuse for losing your one legally positioned foot at contact.

Is overhead better than underarm?

Not automatically. An overhead serve can give you a different angle and pace, but it can also be harder to control. A reliable serve that reaches the back of the court and limits an easy return is usually more useful than a spectacular serve that keeps hitting the service line.

Settle the argument

The overhead action is legal. The serve itself still has to satisfy all the usual squash service rules. Challenge a friend to land five legal overhead serves in a row, then switch to your usual serve and compare the results.

Frequently asked questions

Can you serve overarm in squash?

Yes. Overarm and overhead serves are permitted if all standard service requirements are met.

Can a squash serve hit the side wall?

Yes, after it has hit the front wall first. On the serve, the ball must go directly to the front wall initially.
